Graphic designers are the creators of illustrations, graphics, and visuals for The State News. They work in two realms: editorial and marketing/advertising. There is much overlap between both fields of design to build up a well-rounded skill set of experience, it is encouraged that designers show interest in both.
Editorial design: Charged with the layout of the State Newsprint publication and special editions, as well as editorial illustrations and graphics at the request of Newsroom staff.
Marketing/advertising design: Tasked with either the creation of advertisements for the web and for print. They are also responsible for making sure that these ads fit the quality standards for each medium.
Major projects expected include publishing the weekly newspaper, The State News special issues/editions, the annual update of the media kit, and various direct mailings/social media campaigns as facilitated by the art director and the creative adviser.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Working alongside newsroom staff, marketing/advertising staff, professional advisers, and general manager regarding the brand of the State News
- Create deliver and optimize marketing and promotional materials
- Ensure that design processes are followed by abiding by the State News policy and style-guide
- Spend significant time working to build their craft
Required Qualification:
- Understanding of communication design, theories, and principles
- Has excellent knowledge of modular design, typography, and graphics.
- Technical skills in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign (any other creative skillset is fantastic and encouraged)
- Ability to develop ideas and concepts that adhere to brand standards
