The social media and engagement editor is responsible for consistently elevating The State News' social media and community presence. Through this role, the editor is responsible for developing interactive strategies to build The State News' brand and engage with readers both online and in-person.

5 days per week, $32.00 per day, 10 days per pay period, $320 per 2 week pay period

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists editors in posting content across Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
  • Develop innovative and engaging social media posts and campaigns beyond scheduled posts.
  • Interacts and responds to all comments and messages when responses are warranted.
  • Actively reads online comments, engages with readers, and informs the editor-in-chief and managing editor when problems arise.
  • Help build The State News brand by creating a consistent social media presence and tone to drive traffic to our website.
  • Responsible for overseeing maintenance of all social media accounts for The State News.
  • Work with newsroom leadership to consistently develop and execute engagement events hosted by The State News to engage with community members and readers.
  • Create and schedule the daily newsletter.
  • Use Parse.ly, Google Analytics and Facebook/Twitter/Instagram analytics to inform social media strategy, including posting times, types of content, etc.
  • Be open to finding new ways to engage audiences by utilizing platform-specific functions.
  • Understands the importance of working outside of business hours to respond to breaking news.
  • Communicates with editors to determine how key stories can be elevated with social media, this could mean additional social media posts, innovative social media use, etc.
  • Work with the editor-in-chief and managing editor to effectively communicate and establish shared social media goals and a cohesive digital brand.
  • Teaches staff members to appropriate social media tactics when necessary or by request.
  • Guides content producers in crafting effective social media messages while reporting.
  • Attends daily budget meetings to determine when stories will be scheduled for posting on social media. 
  • Attends weekly editorial board meetings and contributes ideas for editorials and their personal opinion on editorial topics.
  • Works with leaders to update and expand social media strategy and policy
  • Assists in the creation of a social media content calendar
  • Stays up to date with social media platform changes and emerging platforms and makes recommendations about how The State News could utilize these changes.
