  • The campus desk editor is responsible for guiding The State News' campus-related content. Daily tasks include guiding campus reporters through the reporting and writing process, editing and publishing campus stories, and acting as a bridge between reporters and newsroom leadership. A great desk editor not only manages their reporters but serves them as well.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Responsible for guiding all campus-related coverage published in print, on the web, and on social media.
    • Ensures all reporters meet their individual weekly content goals and that campus interests and concerns are being covered by reporters. 
    • Works with reporters, photo and design to brainstorm visuals for stories on the web and in print.
    • Brainstorms unique ways to tell campus stories with desk reporters and other editors, actively considering alternative story formats such as interactives, infographics, video, etc.
    • Assigns stories and works with reporters to flesh out story ideas for print and web publication. 
    • Works with other editors when breaking news occurs to ensure it is covered and someone gets to the scene as quickly as possible.
    • Works closely with other editors to ensure story ideas are not being pursued by multiple reporters.
    • Keeps an eye out for breaking news related to campus coverage, and responds accordingly.
    • Coordinates with the audience engagement editor to ensure stories are being socialized into all of The State News's social media accounts in a timely manner.
    • Ensures reporters are connected to and staying informed with beats and happenings on campus and provides reporters with suggestions and resources for doing so. 
    • Edits campus-related articles on a daily basis, considering the article's flow, sentence structure, and compliance with grammar and AP style standards.
    • Works with the copy chief to ensure each article is copy-checked before being published.
    • Attends daily budget meetings to schedule articles to be published online based on budget meeting conversations.
    • Attends weekly editorial board meetings and contributes ideas for editorials and their personal opinion on editorial topics.
    • Attends weekly development meetings to provide updates on the progress of stories and projects related to the campus desk.
    • Understands what content is being produced at The State News and makes recommendations on where coverage could be strengthened or expanded upon.
    • Present on paper production days to oversee campus-related content going in the paper and to help edit pages before they're sent off to print.
    • Meets regularly with the editor-in-chief to keep them updated on progress and any potential problems or concerns.
    • Connects with the managing editor when a CP is assigned to someone on their desk, ensuring content arrives at the managing editor on deadline.
    • Helps ensure breaking news is covered quickly and effectively and edits breaking news stories as needed.
    • Understands the importance of working outside business hours to respond to breaking news.
    • Works with reporters to set story deadlines and accountability measures to communicate with campus reporters and newsroom leadership about when each article is ready to be edited and published.
    • Maintains regular newsroom office hours as assigned by the editor-in-chief.
