  • The academics reporter is responsible for covering academics-related news, including MSU's research, various colleges, and academic policies. This reporter attends MSU's Board of Trustees meetings and stays up to date with MSU news. As an academics reporter, this person is the first point of contact when academic-related breaking news occurs and should work to be available to cover said news more often than not.


    • Produces at least three stories a week related to MSU's various colleges, academic policies, and other campus interests and concerns.
    • Works to find the most engaging and interesting stories related to MSU administrative policies and concerns while finding the most engaging, interesting, and interactive ways to tell these stories in print and on the web. 
    • Thinks of the best ways to tell these stories in print ' examples include ASF's, graphics, etc. With print being a weekly product, stories should focus on overall trends and reflections. 
    • Thinks of the best ways to tell these stories on the web ' examples include slideshows, graphics, interactive, charts, graphs, video, audio, podcasts, etc. 
    • Covers events via social media with Twitter, Instagram, Facebook when appropriate. 
    • Coordinates with photo and design for visuals to accompany stories. . 
    • Works with the editors and fellow reporters when breaking news happens to ensure it is covered and someone gets to the scene as quickly as possible. 
    • Holds regular weekly meetings with MSU college leaders to build source-reporter relationships and scope out ledes for possible academic stories or concerns
    • Maintains journalistic ethics and social media ethics.
    • Creates stories that are informative, interesting, fair, and accurate.
    • Maintains regular newsroom office hours as assigned by the editor-in-chief.
    • Primarily responsible for writing academic stories, but is not limited to those stories and can also write other types of articles.
