The campus features reporter is responsible for writing feature stories related to Michigan State University. This reporter can write stories about MSU's students, faculty, organizations, or other topics related to life on campus. This reporter should focus on student-centric stories on diverse communities within MSU.


  • Produces at least two feature stories a week related to life on MSU's campus. A good balance is to write one in-depth/long-form/narrative story and one shorter feature-focused story.
  • Stays well-informed on the happenings on campus and forms strong source relationships with active student groups, including campus CORES and COPS groups.
  • Works to find the most engaging and interesting stories while finding the most engaging, interesting, and interactive ways to tell these stories in print and on the web. 
  • Thinks of the best ways to tell these stories in print ' examples include ASF's, graphics, etc. With print being a weekly product, stories should focus on overall trends and reflections. 
  • Think of the best ways to tell these stories on the web ' examples include slideshows, graphics, interactive, charts, graphs, video, audio, podcasts, etc. 
  • Covers events via social media with Twitter, Instagram, Facebook when appropriate. 
  • Coordinates with photo and design for visuals to accompany stories. 
  • Looks in unique places for features-related stories. 
  • Finds a balance between serious profile pieces, light-hearted stories, and vision coverage to ensure well rounded, student-centric pieces.
  • Available to pick up breaking news stories when they occur to ensure they are covered as quickly as possible.
  • Talks with sources daily works with the campus editor to help form relationships with sources.
  • Maintains journalistic ethics and social media ethics.
  • Creates stories that are informative, interesting, fair, and accurate.
  • Maintains regular newsroom office hours as assigned by the editor-in-chief.
  • Primarily responsible for writing campus features stories, but is not limited to those stories and can also write other types of articles.
