The city desk editor is responsible for guiding The State News' city-related content. Daily tasks include guiding city reporters through the reporting and writing process, editing and publishing city stories, and acting as a bridge between reporters and newsroom leadership. A great desk editor not only manages their reporters but serves them as well.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for guiding all city-related coverage published in print and on the web.
  • Ensures all reporters meet their individual weekly content goals and that city interests and concerns are being covered by reporters. 
  • Works with reporters, photo and design to brainstorm visuals for stories on the web and in print. 
  • Brainstorms unique ways to tell campus stories with desk reporters and other editors and considers alternative story formats, interactives, infographics, video, etc.
  • Assigns stories and works with reporters to flesh out story ideas for print and web publication. 
  • Works with editors and reporters when breaking news happens to ensure it is covered and someone gets to the scene as quickly as possible. 
  • Works closely with other editors to ensure story ideas are not being pursued by multiple reporters.
  • Keeps an eye out for breaking news related to city coverage, and responds accordingly.
  • Ensures reporters are connected to and staying informed with beats and happenings in the city and provides reporters with suggestions and resources for doing so.
  • Edits city-related articles on a daily basis, considering the article's flow, sentence structure, and compliance with grammar and AP style standards.
  • Works with the copy chief to ensure each article is copy-checked before being published.
  • Attends daily budget meetings to schedule articles to be published online based on budget meeting conversations.
  • Attends weekly editorial board meetings and contributes ideas for editorials and their personal opinion on editorial topics.
  • Attends weekly development meetings to provide updates on the progress of stories and projects related to the city desk.
  • Understands what content is being produced at The State News and makes recommendations on where coverage could be strengthened or expanded upon.
  • Present on paper production days to oversee city-related content going in the paper and to help edit pages before they're sent off to print.
  • Meets regularly with the editor-in-chief to keep them updated on progress and any potential problems or concerns.
  • Helps ensure breaking news is covered quickly and effectively and edits breaking news stories as needed.
  • Understands the importance of working outside business hours to respond to breaking news.
  • Works with reporters to set story deadlines and accountability measures to communicate with city reporters and newsroom leadership about when each article is ready to be edited and published.
  • Maintains regular newsroom office hours as assigned by the editor-in-chief.
