3 days per week, $30.00 per day, 3 articles per week (6 per pay period) $180 per 2 week pay period

  • The senior city reporter is responsible for covering East Lansing's city government, including decisions and policies that come from the city government, while assisting the city desk editor with editing and publishing city-related content. This reporter attends East Lansing's City Council meetings and stays up to date with East Lansing news.  As senior city reporter, this person is the first point of contact when city government-related breaking news occurs and should work to be available to cover or delegate said news more often than not.


    • Produces or edits at least three stories a week related to policies and happenings of East Lansing.
    • Produces at least one of those three weekly stories in a video format, either through Animoto or as a standalone video project with a videographer, OR ensures that one of the stories has a video complement.
    • Works to find the most engaging and interesting stories related to East Lansing's government while finding the most engaging, interesting, and interactive ways to tell these stories in print and on the web. 
    • Thinks of the best ways to tell these stories in print examples include ASF's, graphics, etc. With print being a weekly product, stories should focus on overall trends and reflections.
    • Thinks of the best ways to tell these stories on the web examples include slideshows, graphics, interactive, charts, graphs, video, audio, podcasts, etc.
    • Covers events via social media with Twitter, Instagram, Facebook when appropriate.
    • Coordinates with photo and design for visuals to accompany stories.  
    • Works with the editors and fellow reporters when breaking news happens to ensure it is covered and someone gets to the scene as quickly as possible. 
    • Holds regular weekly meetings with city council members to build source-reporter relationships and scope out ledes for possible city government-related stories or concerns.
    • Maintains journalistic ethics and social media ethics.
    • Creates stories that are informative, interesting, fair, and accurate. Maintains regular newsroom office hours as assigned by the editor-in-chief.
    • Primarily responsible for writing city government stories, but is not limited to those stories and can also write other types of articles.
