The cops and courts reporter is responsible for covering crime and safety as it relates to MSU and East Lansing. This reporter attends court hearings and stays up to date with East Lansing news. As cops and courts reporter, this person is the first point of contact if court-related breaking news should occur, and should aim to be available to cover said stories more often than not.


  • Produces at least three stories a week related to crime and safety in the city of East Lansing.
  • Attends court hearings deemed newsworthy to the MSU and/or East Lansing communities and writes follow-up stories.
  • Works to find the most engaging and interesting stories related to crime and safety in the city of East Lansing. while finding the most engaging, interesting, and interactive ways to tell these stories in print and on the web. 
  • Thinks of the best ways to tell these stories in print examples include ASF's, graphics, etc. With print being a weekly product, stories should focus on overall trends and reflections.
  • Thinks of the best ways to tell these stories on the web examples include slideshows, graphics, interactive, charts, graphs, video, audio, podcasts, etc.
  • Covers events via social media with Twitter, Instagram, Facebook when appropriate.
  • Coordinates with photo and design for visuals to accompany stories.  
  • Works with the editors and fellow reporters when breaking news happens to ensure it is covered and someone gets to the scene as quickly as possible. 
  • Holds regular weekly meetings with courtroom officials to build source-reporter relationships and scope out ledes for possible crime and safety stories or concerns.
  • Maintains journalistic ethics and social media ethics.
  • Creates stories that are informative, interesting, fair, and accurate.
  • Maintains regular newsroom office hours as assigned by the editor-in-chief.
  • Primarily responsible for writing court stories, but is not limited to those stories and can also write other types of articles.
