The senior political reporter is responsible for covering the city, state, and national elections and related events to the MSU and East Lansing community. As a senior political reporter, this person should seek out content that explains, clarifies, and informs the MSU community about voting laws and procedures, election-related news and results, and other supporting political information.


  • Produces at least three stories a week related to the city, state, or national elections.
  • Produces at least one of those three weekly stories in a video format, either through Animoto or as a standalone project with a videographer. 
  • Present during election night coverage to analyze and report on results from a broader perspective in a timely manner.
  • Works to find the most unique, engaging stories related to elections and voting while finding the most engaging, interesting, and interactive ways to best tell those stories in print and on the web.
  • Thinks of the best ways to tell these stories in print examples include ASF's, graphics, etc. With print being a weekly product, stories should focus on overall trends and reflections.
  • Thinks of the best ways to tell these stories on the web ' examples include slideshows, graphics, interactive, charts, graphs, video, audio, podcasts, etc.
  • Covers events via social media with Twitter, Instagram, Facebook when appropriate.
  • Coordinates with photo and design for visuals to accompany stories.  
  • Holds regular weekly meetings with political science experts to build source-reporter relationships and scope out ledes for possible election-related stories or concerns
  • Works with the city editor to help form relationships with sources to stay well-informed on election processes.
  • Maintains journalistic ethics and social media ethics.
  • Creates stories that are informative, interesting, fair, and accurate.
  • Maintains regular newsroom office hours as assigned by the editor-in-chief.
  • Primarily responsible for writing election stories, but is not limited to those stories and can also write other types of articles.
