    2 days per week, $25.00 per day, 2 articles per week, 4 articles per pay period, $100 per 2 week pay period

    The public health beat reporter is responsible for providing the information our readers need to know about how to stay healthy and safe. This reporter should examine the social determinants of health and how they implicate a wide range of public health issues including the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. 

  • Produces at least two stories a week related to public health and mental health topics that impact MSU students and the Lansing area.

  • Works to find the most engaging and interesting stories while finding the most engaging, interesting, and interactive ways to tell these stories in print and on the web.

  • Thinks of the best ways to tell these stories in print ' examples include ASF's, graphics, etc.

  • Thinks of the best ways to tell these stories on the web ' examples include slideshows, graphics, interactive, charts, graphs, video, audio, podcasts, etc.

  • Covers events via social media with Twitter, Facebook, Instagram when appropriate.

  • Coordinates with photo and design for visuals to accompany stories.

  • Looks in unique places for health and safety-related stories, exploring all of the social determinants of health

  • Talks with sources daily and works with the city editor to help form relationships with sources.

  • Works with the editors and fellow reporters when breaking news happens to ensure it is covered and someone gets to the scene as quickly as possible.

  • Maintains journalistic ethics and social media ethics.

  • Creates stories that are informative, interesting, fair, and accurate.

  • Maintains regular newsroom office hours as assigned by the editor-in-chief.
