The photo desk editor is responsible for guiding The State News' photography content. Daily tasks include guiding photographers through the photography and editing process, overseeing the photo team, and acting as a bridge between reporters and newsroom leadership. A great desk editor not only manages their reporters but serves them as well.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for guiding all photography published in print and on the web.
  • Ensures that all photographers meet their individual weekly content goals and that interests and concerns related to campus, city, and sports are being visually documented.
  • Works with reporters, editors, and designers to brainstorm visuals for stories on the web and in print.
  • Brainstorms unique ways to tell stories of interest through photography.
  • Ensures the State News website has quality visuals that aren't repeated throughout the homepage and alerts desk editors if such should occur.
  • Assigns photo assignments and works with photographers to provide guidance on how each assignment might be covered.
  • Shoots three assignments per week and is in the office Sunday and Wednesday and one other day during Monday-Friday.
  • On Monday's size and color correct photos for the print edition.
  • Works with other editors and reporters when breaking news occurs to ensure it is covered and someone gets to the scene as quickly as possible.
  • Keeps an eye out for breaking news and responds accordingly.
  • Works with photographers to set deadlines and accountability measures, communicates with photographers and newsroom leadership about when photos and other visual work are done, and ready to be accompanied by an article.
  • Works with the editorial staff to ensure each story is accompanied by visual content.
  • Works to keep stock photos up to date, assigning photographers to update them when needed.
  • Meets regularly with the editor-in-chief to keep them updated on progress and any potential problems or concerns.
  • Ensure photographers' captions are error-free.
  • Attends daily budget meetings to establish visuals for each story.
  • Attends weekly editorial board meetings and contributes ideas for editorials and their personal opinion on editorial topics.
  • Attends weekly development meetings to provide updates on the progress of stories and projects related to the photo desk.
  • Understands what content is being produced at The State News and makes recommendations on where coverage could be strengthened or expanded upon.
  • Present on paper days to oversee photo-related content going in the paper and to help edit pages before they're sent off to print.
  • Understands the importance of working outside business hours to respond to breaking news.
  • Maintains regular newsroom office hours as assigned by the editor-in-chief.
