OVERVIEW

3 days per week, $27 per day, 3 assignments per week, 6 assignments per pay period, $162 per 2 week pay period

A senior photographer is responsible for telling visual stories related to MSU's campus, the city of East Lansing and MSU's sports. Photographers will have the opportunity to shoot assignments related to reporter articles and should also work on their own visual storytelling projects.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Shoots at least three assignments a week related to MSU's campus, the city of East Lansing and/or MSU's sports.
  • Shoots at least one of those three weekly assignments as an individual photo story, rather than photos to go with another reporter's story
  • Works to find the most engaging and interesting stories while finding the most engaging, interesting, and interactive ways to tell these stories in print and on the web.
  • Coordinates visual coverage with reporters to ensure proper coverage. 
  • Captions all photos with AP style compliant captions.
  • Looks in unique places for visual stories.
  • Have photos uploaded at halftime of football and basketball games.
  • A gallery should come from most assignments, which means at least five photos. The first photo in the gallery should be cropped at 5X3. If no gallery is produced, ensure at least one photo is cropped 5X3 and labeled as such in the slug.
  • Works with the editors and fellow photographers when breaking news happens to ensure it is covered and someone gets to the scene as quickly as possible. 
  • Stays well-informed on the happenings with MSU's campus, the city of East Lansing and MSU's sports and is connected with active groups. 
  • Talks with sources daily and works with the photo editor to help form relationships with sources.
  • Maintains journalistic ethics and social media ethics.
  • Creates visual stories that are informative, interesting, fair, and accurate.
  • Maintains regular newsroom office hours as assigned by the editor-in-chief.
  • Primarily responsible for capturing photos that will go with another reporter's article, but is not limited to those assignments and can also pursue their own visual storytelling projects.
