The copy chief is responsible for ensuring The State News' content is presented in the best way possible to readers through checking for accuracy and AP style/grammar errors. Daily tasks include guiding copy editors through the editing process and acting as a bridge between copy and newsroom leadership. A great desk editor not only manages their reporters but serves them as well.


  • Responsible for ensuring The State News' content is accurate and error-free.
  • Ensures all copy editors meet their individual weekly content goals and that every article goes through the copy desk before being published.
  • Assigns articles to be copy checked to copy editors and assists the copy editors when questions arise.
  • Fact checks articles, with interview recordings provided by reporters and via Google for statistics, player's positions, etc.
  • Edits articles for grammar and AP Style errors.
  • Present during paper production day to help copy check articles before they go to print.
  • Be prepared to help copy check quickly when breaking news occurs. Understands the importance of working outside business hours to respond to breaking news.
  • Keeps an eye out for breaking news and responds accordingly.
  • Works with copy editors to set deadlines and accountability measures, communicates with copy editors and newsroom leadership about when articles have been copy checked.
  • Works with the editorial staff to ensure each story is fact-checked.
  • Meets regularly with the editor-in-chief to keep them updated on progress and any potential problems or concerns.
  • Attends daily budget meetings to establish which stories need to be copy checked that day.
  • Attends weekly editorial board meetings and contributes ideas for editorials and their personal opinion on editorial topics.
  • Attends weekly development meetings to provide updates on the status of the copy desk.
  • Understands what content is being produced at The State News and makes recommendations on where coverage could be strengthened or expanded upon.
  • Maintains regular newsroom office hours as assigned by the editor-in-chief.
