3 days per week, $27 per day, $162 per 2 week pay period

A copy editor is responsible for helping ensure The State News' content is presented in the best way possible to readers through checking for accuracy and AP style or grammar errors. Daily tasks include working with reporters and editors to review stories before they print.


  • Responsible for ensuring the integrity of The State News' content through checking that articles are accurate and free from errors.
  • Reads and edits every story assigned by the copy chief.
  • Fact checks articles with interview recordings provided by reporters and with Google for statistics, player's positions, etc.
  • Edits articles for grammar and AP Style errors.
  • Coordinates with reporters and editors to ensure stories are copyedited before being published.
  • Works with the editors and fellow copy editors when breaking news happens to ensure it is covered and someone is able to copy edit the article.
  • Stays well-informed on the happenings on MSU's campus, the city of East Lansing and MSU's sports, and is connected with active groups.
  • Communicates with the copy editor when questions or concerns arise.
  • Maintains journalistic ethics and social media ethics.
  • Ensures stories are informative, interesting, fair, and accurate.
  • Maintains regular newsroom office hours as assigned by the editor-in-chief.
  • Primarily responsible for copy editing stories, but is not limited to those assignments and can also pursue other projects if approved.
