OVERVIEW

2 days per day $25 per day, 2 articles per week, $100 per 2 week pay period

The lifestyle writer is responsible for producing opinion pieces related to the MSU and East Lansing communities, popular culture, society, or other topics. This writer crafts opinion pieces that are engaging and interesting to The State News' audience, with well-thought-out analogies, sources, and angles. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Produces at least two opinion articles per week, ensuring those pieces are relevant, well-thought-out, concise, and adheres to The State News' values. A good balance would be one light-hearted opinion piece and one serious, informational piece per week.
  • Reports to the culture desk editor and will communicate with them, send drafts to them and flesh out ideas with them.
  • Creates articles with sourcing (when appropriate) to provide context and background in every opinion piece. 
  • Maintains a balance of opinion pieces about the local community and opinion pieces about culture, society, etc., while having a focus on the diverse subcultures of the MSU community.
  • Works with the culture desk editor to make any necessary edits to opinion pieces.
  • When necessary, coordinates with photo and design for visuals to accompany stories.
  • Brainstorms unique ways to use multimedia and design in opinion pieces and works with the appropriate desk to implement those ideas.
  • Looks in unique places for opinion article ideas.
  • Works with editors and reporters when breaking news happens to ensure it is covered and someone gets to the scene as quickly as possible.
  • Stays well-informed on the happenings related to MSU's campus, the city of East Lansing and MSU's sports and is connected with active groups.
  • Maintains journalistic ethics and social media ethics.
  • Creates stories that are informative, interesting, fair, and accurate.
  • Maintains regular newsroom office hours as assigned by the editor-in-chief.
  • Mainly responsible for writing opinion pieces, but is able to work on other standard articles and/or opinion projects.
