OVERVIEW

3 days a week $26.00 per day, 3 stories per week

$168.00 per 2-week pay period

The culture reporter is responsible for covering stories related to MSU's culture. These stories can range from technology, arts, music, theatre, food, relationships, sex, cultural traditions, and trends. As a culture reporter, this person is responsible for stories that are relevant to students and the MSU community outside of the everyday news cycle and should work to include diverse perspectives in these stories.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Produces at least three stories a week related to entertainment and culture on and around  MSU's campus.
  • Produce at least one of those three weekly stories in a video format, either through Animoto or as a standalone video project with a videographer.
  • Works to find a balance between fun entertainment pieces and more serious critiques of things that influence MSU culture.
  • Works to find the most engaging and interesting stories relating to student interests and concerns while finding the most engaging, interesting, and interactive ways to tell these stories in print and on the web. 
  • Stays well-informed on the happenings on and around campus, determining if events are newsworthy and the best way they should be covered to show multiple student perspectives.
  • Thinks of the best ways to tell these stories in print ' examples include ASF's, graphics, etc. With print being a weekly product, stories should focus on overall trends and reflections. 
  • Thinks of the best ways to tell these stories on the web ' examples include slideshows, graphics, interactive, charts, graphs, video, audio, podcasts, etc. 
  • Covers events with Twitter, Instagram, Facebook when appropriate.
  • Coordinates with photo and design for visuals to accompany stories. 
  • Looks in unique places for entertainment stories, thinking not only of pop culture but other subcultures as well. 
  • Available to pick up breaking news stories when they occur to ensure they are covered as quickly as possible. 
  • Talks with sources daily, works with the campus editor to help form relationships with sources.
  • Maintains journalistic ethics and social media ethics.
  • Creates stories that are informative, interesting, fair, and accurate.
  • Maintains regular newsroom office hours as assigned by the editor-in-chief.
  • Primarily responsible for writing entertainment-related stories, but is not limited to those stories and can also write other types of articles.
